In fall 2023, our Chair of Romance Studies and Applied Linguistics is organising an international intensive course on empirical methodology in Romance Linguistics as part of the Erasmus-funded Blended Intensive Programme (BIP).?The course focuses on the empirical investigation of the romance varieties in different modules: One focus is on field research methods, for example the creation of questionnaires, different types of interviews or elicitation techniques. The creation of language corpora based on the collected data is another central topic of the course, as well as their analysis using statistical methods (multiple regression analysis, cross tabulations) and also the visualization of the results through geolocalization or digital corpora. This content will be taught by experienced linguists invited from european, american and ?US universities.?
?
The course is aimed at bachelor's/master's students as well as doctoral students who will thus have the opportunity to deepen their practical knowledge in linguistics. The different academic levels of the participants will be taken into account in the syllabus as well as in the evaluation. Due to the international orientation of the course, the participants also have the opportunity to gain first experiences in scientific cooperation on an international level and in a multilingual environment. In addition, upon successful participation, 3 ECTS can be earned through a variety of activities (see program).?
?
Participants also have the possibility to present their own work (thesis or dissertation) during the course and to discuss it with the invited experts and the participants. This can be done as a poster or as a presentation, whereby the speaking time is limited to 20 minutes. Thematically, the presentation should be related to the topic of the course, i.e. the methodology and data analysis should be in the foreground.
?
Inscription and student?s grant:
?
The participation in the intensive course is free of charge. For participants from European universities, the participation in the course can be funded by the Erasmus programme with a?daily rate of 79€, as well as with a travel allowance (Green Travel) for sustainable travel.?Unfortunately, this funding cannot be granted to participants from German universities.

Confirmed lecturers
Albert Wall is Assistant Professor of Romance Linguistics at the Institute of Romance Studies at the University of Vienna since 2020. He received his master¡¯s degree from the University of T¨¹bingen and his PhD from the University of Z¨¹rich. He is interested in the syntax and semantics of Ibero-Romance varieties, the syntax-phonology interface, and psycholinguistics. Currently, he works on differential object marking in Spanish and Portuguese, pseudo-incorporation in Brazilian Portuguese and semantic variation in Spanish from a geolinguistic perspective. In his work, which often targets phenomena that occur rather infrequently in spoken and written data but nonetheless have high theoretical relevance, he combines different empirical methods, such as corpus research, interviews, and a variety of experimental methods. He is co-editor (together with Johannes Kabatek) of the Manual of Brazilian Portuguese Linguistics, which has been published by De Gruyter in 2022.

Scott Schwenter?is Professor of Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the Ohio State University, was appointed Director of the Center for Latin American Studies in September 2020. He?is a variationist sociolinguist and pragmaticist, working on grammatical issues in both Spanish and Portuguese, including comparative aspects of the two languages. His work is corpus-based, and features multivariate statistical analysis of broad-scale patterns across different varieties of Spanish and Portuguese. He is primarily interested in the contextual conditioning of linguistic variables, and why speakers choose to express things in a given way when they are faced with multiple options for conveying the same content. His most recent work has focused on the pronominal systems of both Spanish and Portuguese and also on negation in Romance languages more generally. He is currently writing a comparative grammar of Spanish and Portuguese, to be published by Routledge.
