International visibility for Augsburg as a place for research

The University of Augsburg has been listed in the Shanghai Ranking 2024 in the fields of mathematics, atmospheric research, and educational research. The German Research Foundation’s Research Atlas has praised mathematics at Augsburg.

In the recently published Shanghai Ranking 2024 (Academic Ranking of World Universities, ARWU), the University of Augsburg achieved very good results in three fields of research. In the fields of mathematics and atmospheric research, the university was ranked between 201 and 300 out of 1,000 universities worldwide. Educational research at the university was ranked between 301 and 400.

The Shanghai Ranking is one of the most prestigious rankings worldwide. It rates universities based on criteria such as performance in research and quality of academic staff, which is, above all else, based on the quality and quantity of academic publications. In this context, international cooperation naturally plays an important role.

Excellent rankings in mathematics, atmospheric research, and educational research

Mathematics

In recent years, the University of Augsburg has increasingly established itself as a leading institution in international research. Its ranking in the field of mathematics is particularly impressive. The Institute of Mathematics at the University of Augsburg has established itself throughout the last fifteen years as a one of the leading mathematical institutes in Germany. This followed a strategic realignment as part of generational change at the institute, which has been supported by Bavaria’s Hightech Agenda.

This success is also confirmed by the recently published DFG Research Atlas, which reports above-average DFG funding for mathematics at Augsburg, as well as at Trier and Bielefeld.
“Our top positioning in these fields of research is a clear sign of the quality and impact of research at the University of Augsburg,” says Prof Malte Peter, professor for applied analysis, who became a lifetime member of Clare Hall last year, one of the 31 colleges of the University of Cambridge. With regards to mathematics, he adds: “We are continually pursuing both internal and interdisciplinary cooperations with other institutes, such as the University of Cambridge, and are following innovative approaches to research, for example through CAAPS, to address global challenges and advance the scientific community.” The Centre for Advanced Analytics and Predictive Sciences (CAAPS) considers data a crucial raw material for current and future societies. The approach to research is therefore to generate original and intelligent data, which can be modelled and used in an integrated way.

Atmospheric research

Alongside excellent research results, atmospheric research at the University of Augsburg can look back on many years of institutionalised research cooperations, such the joint professorship for atmospheric remote sensing with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and as a consortium partner of the Schneefernerhaus Environmental Research Station on the Zugspitze. Last but not least, it is also a key innovator at the Centre for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg. “In particular, the experimental and methodological work in the field of remote sensing of the atmosphere at the edge of space has proven to be very successful. The work is integrated into international cooperations and contributes equally towards answering basic scientific and application-oriented questions in the field of atmospheric dynamics and climate research,” says Prof Michael Bittner, professor of atmospheric remote sensing.

Educational research

The University of Augsburg also achieved a good ranking in the field of educational research. In particular, the number of publications in international top journals and the number of citations from papers published by researchers at Augsburg in other academic publications have increased in the field of educational research. “This high international visibility of research produced at Augsburg and the associated reputation certainly contribute to the good positioning in the Shanghai Ranking,” says Prof Markus Dresel, who holds the chair of psychology.

The University of Augsburg performed particularly well in the area of academic publications and citations. These indicators, which play a central role in the Shanghai Ranking, demonstrate the relevance and influence of the university's research results at the international level.

These impressive rankings will help to strengthen the University of Augsburg for the future. “This success motivates us to further expand our internationally oriented research and promote academic excellence in all areas,” added Doering-Manteuffel.

About the Shanghai Ranking (ARWU)

The Shanghai Ranking was established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003 and is one of the most prestigious international university rankings. It evaluates universities on the basis of objective criteria such as research performance, academic publications, and international visibility.
