The Location Development Section conducts an annual downtown monitoring together with the Economic Department of the City of Augsburg. Passers-by in the city centre are counted and interviewed. The analyses of the now more than 10,000 interviews provide information about changes in the reasons for visiting and shopping behaviour and serve the city administration as a basis for urban planning decisions. While shopping remains the most important reason for visiting the city centre despite a slight but continuous decline, the leisure value of the city centre has been significantly increased: almost every fourth visitor comes to stroll, meet friends or for gastronomic offers.
