In order to meet the increased economic importance of the country, the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China decided to create a market-oriented civil code by 2020. The first step was the adoption of the General Rules of Civil Law in March 2017, a new General Part for civil law. At a conference of the Research Center for Chinese Law at the University of Augsburg in July 2017, Chinese and German legal scholars discussed similarities and differences between the legal systems as well as their social and political backgrounds. Attention was paid in particular to the sections on general principles of law, natural and legal persons, the law of declarations of intent and liability law. These results are presented in the conference volume now available. It concentrates on various sub-areas of reform and presents them from a Chinese and sometimes also a German perspective. In addition, the volume contains the original Chinese legal text of the General Rules of Civil Law as well as a synoptic English and German translation of the legal text.
