(...) The event was titled "Legality and Limitation of Powers: Values, Principles and Regulations in Civil Law, Criminal Law and Public Law". Inspired by current political and social developments in both hemispheres, the participants examined the effects of legality maxims and the regulation of powers in various areas of law from a South African and German perspective.

The cooperation with the University of Johannesburg exists for more than 15 years and has been able to look back on a lively exchange in the past. The conference in October 2017 was the second symposium after 2016 and the "return visit" to South Africa after the 2016 conference had taken place in Augsburg. A concept of promoting young researchers was continued: on both sides experienced researchers as well as junior researchers took part. First, one participant explained the German perspective on a particular legal problem, followed by a researcher from Johannesburg who compared it with South African law. The choice of legal areas covered was broad: from private international law, European and constitutional law, methodology and company law to cartel and labour law, numerous current legal problems were discussed.

After intense discussions, the researchers involved were able to discuss outstanding issues at joint social events, which also allowed them to strengthen the inter-university exchange. Thus, during a joint safari, the guests from Augsburg got to know both the richness and beauty of South African nature and the hospitality and traditions of the people of South Africa.

The conference was organised by Prof. Charl Hugo and Prof. Letlhokwa G. Mpedi and by the Augsburg Center for Global Economic Law and Regulation (ACELR). Plans are to expand the cooperation between the two faculties in the coming years through further research visits. Joint conferences are planned to take place every two years. The symposium for 2019 is already in preparation.
