Epochs and study areas offered at History Departments are usually determined by fixed standards, strategic considerations, and fortunate opportunities.?

At the University of Augsburg – as at all Bavarian universities – there is the foundational structure based on the epochs and topics required by the teacher training programme. These include "Ancient History" (2000 BC–600 AD), "Medieval History" (500–1500), "Early Modern History" (1500–1800), "Modern and Contemporary History" (since 1800), "Bavarian and Swabian Regional History" (extended in Augsburg to include "European Regional History") and "History Didactics". All these professorships are represented by a large number of staff and offer a broad and varied range of courses.?

?

Yet, studying History at the University of Augsburg offers much more than the standard programme. Additional focus areas that enjoy a transregional appeal feed courses both into the Bachelor and Master degree, but also interdisciplinary programmes. These additional areas extend into the early modern and contemporary periods. On the one hand, they connect to the professorship of "Contemporary History" institutionalized through a cooperation with the " Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin", and the Professorship of "Transatlantic History and Culture" and the "Entangled History of Germany with Eastern Europe" (linked to the Bukovina Institute). These each study the interrelations between their respective regions and Europe.

?

On the other hand, with "European Cultural History" and "Global Environmental History and Environmental Humanities", the discipline of History at the University of Augsburg also has two methodologically and thematically innovative specialisations that build bridges to other subjects in the humanities and natural sciences.??

All historical sub-disciplines have a specific research profile. These can be found on the respective webpages.?
