4th Conference of the Network for Qualitative Methods on the Topic "Transformations, Breaks and (In-)Consistencies - Long-term Perspectives in Qualitative Social Research"?(19th to 21st of April 2023)

Qualitative methods are predestined by their orientation to everyday life worlds and everyday practices to not only collect positions at a certain point in time, but also to trace (in)consistencies, ruptures and transformations over time. Especially by taking a long-term perspective on processes of interpersonal communication and the negotiation of meanings, qualitative research can show that attitudes and beliefs are often situationally activated and continuously evaluated, but at the same time can have persistent elements under changing conditions.

?

However, for various, and often ?rather research pragmatic reasons, the qualitative long-term perspective is hardly ever redeemed in the current research landscape and, if so, rather via reconstructive elements in the context of short, one-time field visits. Method triangulations also typically aim more at a juxtaposition than a temporal succession of measurements. A long-term study design that focuses on the (in)consistencies, breaks, and transformations themselves has been the rarity so far. This conference therefore aims to reflect on qualitative long-term research and studies with qualitative multiple treatments from a conceptual, methodological and research-practical point of view and to present projects, methodological strategies and approaches.
