Content: The lecture is split into two equal parts, the first of which is an introduction to organisational theory (Prof. Dr. Lehmann, Chair of Management & Organisation) whereas the second part is an introduction to human resource management (Prof. Dr. Warning, Chair of Global Business and Human Resource Management). The introduction to human resource aims to convey the special role of employees in an organisation as well as introduce central instruments of personnel policy. Content: The course highlights the major aspects of personnel policy over the life cycle of an employee starting with their hiring and ending with their leaving of the organisation. Students are made familiar with the economic principles that govern personnel decisions, learn to analyse these practices and evaluate them. The lecture includes the topics of adverse selection and personnel selection, training and development, work structure, moral hazard and compensation, internal career incentives, personnel evaluation and layoffs. Content: The course is split into two equal parts, the first of which highlights the basic models of international economic theory (Prof. Dr. Welzel, Chair of Economic Policy) and the concepts of international business management (Prof. Dr. Warning, Chair of Global Business and Human Resource Management). Hence, the course builds an important foundation for more advanced honours modules. Content: The lecture covers fundamental instruments of human resource management and analyses how and why these instruments vary across countries. Furthermore, students learn to interpret empirical evidence in the realm of international human resource management. The covered topics include methods for international comparisons, international differences in education, working time across countries, compensation compared internationally, and differences in family policy in different countries. Content: The seminar focuses in the empirical analysis of questions in the realm of human resource management – usually in an international context. Students are introduced to working with the software Excel. Hypotheses of empirical studies are tested with simple methods, interpreted and put into the context of current literature. Type: Seminar for the supervision of a final thesis
Content: The Seminar for Final Theses accompanies the writing process of your bachelor thesis and includes an extensive discussion of relevant literature, the categorisation and evaluation of scientific literature as well as the writing process of the bachelor thesis. In open discussion sessions in small groups, the students can continuously discuss current problems with regards to their thesis. In addition, students have the opportunity to present their work in an interim presentation to their fellow students and their supervisor to give them to the chance to discuss questions and problems. While the participation in this seminar is voluntary, we strongly encourage students to take the opportunity.?

Content: The course teaches the use of empirical methods in the analysis of data from human resources. The focus of the course is on the selection and application of suitable methods as well as the interpretation and evaluation of empirical results. During the course, hypotheses from theory are tested using the statistical software Stata. The focus of the course is e.g. on work experience and compensation, compensation differences between groups, returns to education, compensation over time, and promotion decisions. Methodologically, interaction effects, effect sizes, and predictions in cross-sectional and panel data are discussed. Content: Students are provided with advanced theoretical concepts of human resource management with a focus on questions that are of relevance for decision makers with staff responsibility (in- and outside of the HR department). Theoretical models are used as a foundation for empirical designs and hypotheses, which are tested on the basis of current research. The covered topics include compensation, career incentives and promotions, job design, work-life balance and employee satisfaction as well as fairness and reciprocity. Content: After completing this module successfully, students will be able to analyze problems related to education theoretically and empirically. They will be able to explain and evaluate educational choices in different stages of life using economic principles. They will be able to derive implications for individuals, firms, and policymakers. Students will be able to derive empirically testable hypotheses and to examine them based on scientific articles and by application of simple statistical tests.

Type: Seminar for the supervision of final theses
Content: The seminar for final theses accompanies the writing of the master thesis. In regular sessions, the identification of relevant literature, the categorisation and evaluation of scientific literature and the writing of master theses are discussed in detail. In open discussion rounds, problems related to one's own work can be continuously discussed in small groups. In addition, up to two interim presentations to fellow students and supervisors are possible, in which students can present initial results, ask questions and discuss problems. Participation in the seminar is voluntary but is strongly recommended.
