Review: Workshop on Interdisciplinary Research

The aim of the workshop was to gain an overview of the various dimensions, potentials and hurdles of interdisciplinary research processes. This included developing an understanding of the conceptual vocabulary of interdisciplinarity and related approaches, as well as getting to know different types of methods for interdisciplinary research.?

The day began with exploring one's own position as a scientist, also to get to know each other and to discuss the importance of the various dimensions of socialisation and belonging for interdisciplinary work and collaboration in science. In an introductory lecture, Prof. Dr. Vilsmaier presented the theoretical and methodological foundations of various types of interdisciplinary research. Subsequently, different dimensions of integration were discussed – including communicative, organisational, social and epistemological aspects. In the main part of the workshop, Ms Vilsmaier presented the methods for interdisciplinary research. These were discussed in relation to BRaVE and the Centre for Climate Resilience. The research fields were then jointly mapped and interfaces identified.?

In the last part of the workshop, the BRaVE doctoral students had the opportunity to discuss their personal challenges with regard to this interdisciplinary doctoral project and to explore the challenges of interdisciplinary career paths.
