BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE: LAST THINGS TO DO before you leave

The Studierendenwerk will contact you via email and send you your rental contract as well as the contact details of the manager of your dormitory.

Please be aware of the holidays in Germany, especially the holiday on 3 October and the Easter holidays in April.

?

The dormitory managers do not usually work on weekends and in the evening. If it does not work out to schedule an appointment with the dormitory manager due to your arrival day or time, please contact your Buddy. They might be able to pick up the dormitory key for you before you arrive.

Students who have a visa only have to send the documents via email to complete the city registration. You will be able to pick up the confirmation of the city registration at the International Office once you are in Augsburg. You will be notified as soon as it is available.

?

Students who do not have a visa will need to go to the Foreigners Registration Office during the Orientation Week to complete the city registration.

Your First Steps in Augsburg

When?: As soon as you arrive

As soon as you arrive in Augsburg you should check into the dormitory in order to get your keys and to move into your room. To schedule the move-in, you need to contact the dormitory manager via email before you travel to Augsburg.
?

As part of the Orientation Week you will also visit the Studierendewerk Office and sign the original rental contract.

When?: As soon as you arrive. You will be notified about the pick-up time-slots.

?

Before the semester starts, you will need to stop by the International Office to be checked-in and to pick up your student ID "Campus Card". With the Campus Card you can use the bus/tram in Augsburg, pay for food and copies on campus and rent books in the library.

?

The International Office can be found on campus in building M2. Please refer to the campus map at the bottom of this website.

When?: In the week before the semester

?

In the week before the semester starts, you will participate in a wide variety of events, such as the official Welcome Sessions of the International Office and the faculties. The student group Erasmus Student Network (ESN) will offer some fun social events such as a city scavenger hunt, a Bavarian Breakfast or a club night, so you can meet the other exchange students and get to know Augsburg. If you want to find out more about ESN, do have a look at their website.

?

Also, as part of the Orientation Week, students with EU nationalities and Non-EU students without a visa will register with the city of Augsburg at the Foreigners Registration Office.

As a Non-EU student with a visa you register with the city of Augsburg by sending your documents via email to the Foreigners Registration Office before you depart for Augsburg (see step 3 above under "BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE: LAST THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE").

?

You only need to pick up the confirmation of the city registration at the International Office. You will be notified as soon as you can pick it up.

Registration with the City

As a Non-EU student without a visa you need to send your documents for the city registration by email to the Foreigners Registration Office before you leave for Augsburg (see step 3 above under "BEFORE YOUR DEPARTURE: LAST THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU LEAVE"). The registration with the city will be completed as part of the Orientation Week. You will be guided through the process by the International Office.

?

Residence Permit

After you have successfully registered with the city, you need to apply for your residence permit. Please do so as soon as you can, since it can take?up to three months to receive the residence permit card after you have submitted your (complete) application. Please apply online via https://www.augsburg.de/buergerservice-rathaus/buergerservice/digitalisierung/online-services-auslaenderbehoerde#/#bueOverview and choose "Residence permit for training".

?

Scans of the following documents are required during the application process:

  • Copy of your passport (including the visa - if applicable)
  • Current enrolment certificate ("Immatrikulationsbescheinigung")
  • Proof of financial support (e.g. a blocked account with the sum of 934 € x the number of months of your remaining stay, or a scholarship letter, or a ¡°Verpflichtungserkl?rung¡± from a German / EU-citizen)
  • Proof of health insurance (e.g. a letter from TK/AOK/etc. confirming your membership with them)
After the Foreigners Registration Office has checked your documents, you will be given an appointment for a personal interview. At the personal interview, you will need to pay a fee of 100 Euros by debit or credit card and provide a recent passport photo.

As an exchange student with EU citizenship you can enter Germany freely and are allowed to stay until the end of your exchange. But you do need to register with the city of Augsburg. For EU citizens the so-called "B¨¹rgerb¨¹ros" (Citizens Offices) are the responsible offices for the city registration.

?

You will complete the registration with the city as part of the Welcome Weeks. The International Office will schedule the appointments at the B¨¹rgerb¨¹ro for you and will guide you through the process.

To the appointment you need to bring the following documents:

  1. Passport or National ID
  2. "Wohnungsgeberbest?tigung" (confirmation of the landlord/provider of housing space). You have received the document by email from the Studierendenwerk together with your rental contract.

When: In the week before the semester starts

?

Unlike other courses, the registration for German language courses is usually only possible within a fixed timeframe in the week before the start of the lecure period. Please be aware of the registration deadline, which is usually at noon on the Friday before the semester starts.

?

Detailed and up-to-date Information about language course registration can be found on the website of the Language Center: /en/organisation/einrichtungen/sz/fremdsprachenangebot/deutsch-als-fremdsprache/

?

To figure out which German language level you have you should take a placement test online: https://einstufungstests.klett-sprachen.de/eks/DaF-A1-C1/

?

Then please choose German language courses on the corresponding level. For example: If you have an A2 proficiency according to the placement test, you should take German classes on an A2 level.

When?: As yoon as you have arrived

Since you will be staying in Germany for a rather short period of time, we recommend buying a prepaid SIM card without a contract. There are many service providers that offer prepaid cards that include internet flat rates.

Prepaid cards themselves are free, meaning you only have to pay the amount you use for calling, texting, and internet. Prepaid cards start from about 10 Euro. You can buy them in supermarkets (Lidl,ALDI, etc.), in electronic stores (e.g. MediaMarkt, Saturn), or drug stores (Rossmann, dm, M¨¹ller, etc.) They are usually located at the checkout counter.

We recommend that you complete this step with your Buddy. They can help you set up and activate your SIM card (internet access may be necessary). It may be useful to use the same service provider that your Buddy has, as they will be familiar with the process. As soon as you have a German cell phone number, please share it with the WeltWeit Team via your Mobility Online workflow!

When?: As soon as you have arrived

You must have a German bank account from which rent payments can be deducted. You can open up a bank account at any bank in Augsburg, such as Stadtsparkasse, Commerzbank, VR Bank etc. In order to open up an account, please make an appointment at an affiliation of the bank. Alternatively, international students often use the service of online banks such as N26 instead of a local bank in Augsburg.

The documents you need to open up the account differ from bank to bank. Typical documents that banks might ask you to hand in are:

- your letter of admission (this serves as proof that you are a student)
- your rental contract
- passport/ID
- your tax ID (Steuer-Identifikationsnummer). You will receive your tax ID after you have registered with the city (see steps above)
- a German telephone number (this is necessary for online banking)
- your address in Germany

?

As soon as you have a bank account with an IBAN account number you can activate your blocked account to have your monthly installment transferred to your bank account. The documents you need to activate the blocked account are specific to your blocked account provider, so please check with them what exactly you need to submit for the activation.

When?: Within the first 3 weeks of the semester

?

During the first three weeks of the semester it is possible that your course schedule changes, because you dropped or added a course. However, 2 weeks after?the start of the lecture period your course schedule should be finalized. As soon as that is the case, please enter your modules in your workflow in Mobility-Online, so we can check if your selection is ok.

When?: Within three weeks after your arrival
?

Please enter your German cell phone number in your Mobility-Online workflow, so we can get in touch with you in emegerncy cases.
