The area Augsburg/Munich is one of Europe's most important IT locations and one of the world's leading technology areas. Three of the four biggest Bavarian universities with computer science are settled in this area, including the University of Augsburg. Software plays a key role in the information and communication technology. This is the case for both technical applications (e.g., automotive, avionics, medicine, production, mechatronics, robotics, etc.) and IT in commercial enterprises. Software engineering is a particular key aspect of Augsburg's computer science. Coordinating the elite study course of software engineering that is operated together with the Technical University Munich and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, the University of Augsburg is one of the leading addresses for software engineering in Germany.

The institute has a wide, international research network with partners in the US, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Technology transfer is conducted with international companies and small businesses of the region. The application areas thereby range from business informatics, web applications, and e-commerce to aerospace, automotive, production, medicine, mechatronics, and robotics. The institute cooperates with companies in terms of internships, bachelor, master, and diploma theses as well as in the context of contract research and advanced trainings. Together with the technology and foundation center aiti-park, the institute supports foundations of enterprises.

Institute for Software & Systems Engineering

The Institute for Software & Systems Engineering (ISSE), directed by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Reif, is a scientific institution within the Faculty of Applied Computer Science of the University of Augsburg. In research, the institute supports both fundamental and application-oriented research in all areas of software and systems engineering. In teaching, the institute facilitates the further development of the faculty's and university's relevant course offerings.
