Oxford Winter School
Oxford Winter School
Since 2023, the IEHHS, with financial support from DEMEDA, has been offering medical students from Augsburg scholarships to attend the Oxford Bioethics Winter School. We would like to continue to support this in the future. Please look out for new announcements in the fall.

What is the Oxford Bioethics Winter School?
Since 2016, the Ethox Center (Nuffield Department of Population Health, University of Oxford), the Department of Medical Humanities of the VU University Medical Centre (Vumc) and the Department of Philosophy of VU University in Amsterdam have offered a Winter School for the MA Philosophy, Bioethics and Health students of VUmc/VU and the DPhil students of Ethox. In January 2023, the IEHHS made it possible for medical students from the University of Augsburg to participate for the first time.
?
During the one-week Winter School, students discuss scientific papers on current bioethical issues published by Ethox employees. The Winter School is based on a “critic-meets-author” structure, where students have the opportunity to engage in an intensive and stimulating discussion with authors and other participants.
?
Participation includes the critical reading of approx. 12-14 articles, which will be discussed during the Winter School. In addition, the Augsburg medical students will have the opportunity to comment on a presentation by an Amsterdam student and prepare further questions for the authors of Ethox. It is also expected that all students prepare questions for all articles in order to actively participate in the discussion. The discussions will be held in English.
?
In addition to the academic discussions, students will participate in the 'Uncomfortable Oxford Walking Tour', which explores Oxford's history of racism, colonialism, discrimination against women and other 'uncomfortable' topics, as well as a social event organized by the Ethox Centre at the Big Data Institute, Oxford.
