Research scientist (m/f/d) - PostDoc
(Socio-ecological modelling with a focus on agricultural systems)

in an initially fixed-term employment for a period of three years with regular working hours. The position is suitable for part-time employment. The salary is determined based on prior experience and on the fulfilment of requirements according to the German public sector pay scale up to E13 TV-L.

The Centre for Climate Resilience at the University of Augsburg was founded at the end of 2020. The research centre is dedicated to research and science communication in the field of climate resilience with an interdisciplinary approach. The aim is to develop scientific foundations and holistic and implementable strategies at regional, national and international level that demonstrate adaptations to the unavoidable consequences of climate change.

Your tasks:

  • Produce high quality scientific and/or technical papers suitable for publication in reputable journals and for presentation at national and international conferences.
  • Managing of smaller research projects or individual project components as required.
  • Coaching and mentoring of technical staff, students and early career scientists.
  • Planning and implementation of courses amounting to 5 semester hours per week (5 x 45 minutes teaching during the semester).
  • Participation in cross-sectoral assessments or international initiatives, e.g. on climate change mitigation, adaptation, food supply and sustainability.
  • Support the development of the area of sustainability and resilience research for agricultural systems at the Centre for Climate Resilience.
  • Support the academic self-administration tasks of the chair and engage in different university bodies as needed.

Employment requirements:

  • Education/Qualifications: A PhD in a relevant field, such as environmental science, geography, geoecology, agricultural systems, systems science, engineering with a focus on agricultural/environmental science or a related field.
  • Communication: Very good written and oral communication skills in English, including the ability to publish research findings, prepare reports and present the results of scientific investigations at national and international conferences and stakeholder meetings.
  • Publications: A solid list of publications record in high-quality journals.
  • Behaviour: Professional and respectful behaviours and attitudes in a collaborative environment.

Essential are:

  • Extensive knowledge of agricultural systems and food systems both in industrialized countries and in countries of the Global South.
  • Solid social-ecological modelling skills or modelling skills for human-environment relationships at large scales (regional to global), for example, simulation modelling of crop dynamics and agricultural systems, agent-based modelling, statistical modelling of agricultural production, land use and bioeconomic regional modelling, modelling climatic and other risks in agricultural systems.
  • Programming knowledge, for example with R, Python, Matlab and experience in the use of spatial analyses.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary, research team and to conduct independent individual research to contribute to common research objectives of the working group, for example by linking different methodologies and models.
  • A demonstration of scientific innovation and creativity and the ability and willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.

Desirable is

  • Experience with geographic information systems.
