For more than 35 years, the ISLA Institute of Iberian and Latin American Studies has been connecting and promoting in an interdisciplinary way the various research, international learning-teaching projects, and transfer regarding the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas (with consideration of Creole and Lusophone African Cultures and Societies) at the University of Augsburg. Along with individual and collective research projects and the dedicated promotion of young researchers ('Junges ISLA'), the Institute’s activities and channels include the established '
Mesa Redonda' publication series, the ‘Augsburg University Prize for Iberian and Latin American Studies’ as well as recently the international 'HORIZONTES Film Studies Network', the transatlantic 'Culturas Urbanas' Working Group, & cet. (see sections). Since 2021, the ISLA participates also in the International Doctorate Program "
Rethinking Environment" (Elite Network of Bavaria); since 2023, in the research-oriented "
Ibero-Romance Cultural Studies" (MA); and since 2024, in the transdisciplinary "
Urban Cultures" (MA) international joint study program.
